What is a Cable Assembly?

A cable assembly is a group of wires or cables that are bundled together, organized, and often enclosed in a protective material. They are designed to transmit electrical signals or power between two or more devices or systems.

Cable assemblies are different from wire harnesses in that they typically offer more robust protection in the form of insulation, shielding, or conduit, whereas wire harnesses generally are a simpler group of wires with minimal protection.

Cables can be customized to specific applications, for length, connector type, shielding, and environmental resistance. They are commonly used in aerospace, medical, automotive, telecommunications, and industrial automation industries.

Each application provides unique challenges for a cable assembly’s design. These challenges can include things like repetitive motion, torsional, bending, or mechanical stress, temperature and humidity extremes, exposures to oils, abrasives or chemicals, vibration, heat dissipation, and electrical interference.

With our 30+ years of experience building custom cable assemblies of varying degrees of complexity across the multiple industries we can support new product development, current production builds with ‘build to print’ services, or legacy products with ‘build to sample’ services.

We specialize in high mix, low to medium volume production. To streamline inventory management, we facilitate pull or kanban replenishments, blanket orders, and direct shipments to your customers, complete with custom-branded packaging.

We have experience working with:

  • Low voltage signal wires with passive and active componentry
  • Cabling and connector systems for standard (120V) and higher voltage (5k) applications
  • Large gauge connector cable termination (1/0 awg custom battery charging cables)
  • Air tubing and associated pneumatic components
  • Mechanical switching devices
  • LED signaling components
  • Part marking options tailored to your needs, including labeling, engraving, or pad printing

Often in the design process, a cable assembly is the last thing manufacturers think about. In many cases, these cables cost a fraction of what the end items cost. It can cause quite a headache when a cable assembly prevents a shipment from going to your customer.

CPS prides itself on doing everything we can to answer ‘yes’ when a customer calls and tells us that they need their product right away.
